Monica Rotgans, educated and trained in fine art painting and monument work, has mastered an extensive range of techniques, materials, and designs throughout her successful professional career.
Graduating with honours and awards in 1977 from the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy) Amsterdam, Netherlands, Monica Rotgans is unequivocally the accomplished and professional, highly competent and creative, fully independent and working Artist.
Monica has undertaken intensive research and analysis, since 2000, of contemporary and historical paints, the various methods of paint and colour usage in the fine arts of painting and sculpture, as the basis for a series of specialized, in depth presentations and publications.
Painted Works
the Spanish bull, Toros y Tierras, Australian Structures
Connecting with, and referencing to the work initiated at the State Academy, Monica's paintings and drawings from the period 1976-1983, explore and capture the Dutch landscapes, horizons, skies, and farmland cows. The Netherlands government Department of Foreign Affairs is one example of the collectors that acquired Monica's landscape and sky paintings of this period. In this instance specifically for display in it's international Embassies and Consulates.
From 1983, Monica developed her Dutch, cooler palette into the earthier, warmer, reds and yellows colour dominated palette, directed to achieving and presenting ultimately the 'toros y tierras' series of works. These drawn and painted works portray the powerful, unpredictable Spanish fighting bulls and unmistakable Andalusian landscapes. The bulls were also sculpted in bronze, in silver, and glass.
Monica's palette evolved in 2007 to the rich blues, purples and greens through her discovering and interpreting the intense light of the Australian Continent. Her annual visits to Australia provide inspiration for the new series of works titled Australian Structures and Oceans.

Synchronous with Monica's painted work is her determination to fulfill a desire for three dimensionality of form; the result is the series of works in bronze materialized in the tradition of the 'animaliers'.
Works in Glass
studio and commissioned work
The use of glass as a primary medium grew from Monica's specialized skills in creating and designing monument works. Beginning with traditional 'lead glass', to 'applique glass', and 'blown' or 'molded' glass, over to the techniques of 'sand etched' and controlled temperature furnace, or oven 'fused', bullseye glass.
These techniques are evident in Monica's work after 2006. The commissioned projects for Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kapel, O.L.V.G. in Amsterdam, (Chapel windows, remembrance memorial in the Chapel garden, the unique and symbolic glass urn). These are excellent examples of Monica's pioneering mastery of the techniques, and the possibilities, of the creative applications.
Author
on paint and pigment, colour and cattle
Monica's written work is commissioned and published for a diverse range of professional, general, and specialized magazines, annuals, and periodicals. Article subjects include art and paint, art history and painted art, art techniques, bovine livestock, and 'tauromaquia'.
In 2005 Monica authored 'Verf, 500,000 jaar verf en schilderkunst' ( Paint, 500,000 years of paint and painted art ) a standard work, hardcover book that presents a new perspective on colour and painted art from the artist's point of view. This book is now in educational curriculum and teaching manifests for various institutes and places of learning.

Photography is a logical facet of Monica's creative work, giving us a different, direct and concentrated view of our world and environment. Three outstanding contemporary series of Monica's photographic work are titled: Andalucìa, Shanghai, and the recent Australian Structures.
Monica Rotgans works are acquired by private collectors and individuals, public and private businesses, corporations, government ministries, and multinationals.
Commissioned works include paintings, and sculptures in bronze or silver, and glass projects.

Monica Rotgans is een veelzijdig beeldend kunstenaar. Opgeleid als schilder en monumentaal vormgever aan de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, studeerde ze na 7 jaar voltijds studie in 1977 af. Sindsdien heeft ze zich in de loop van haar carrière een breed scala aan materialen, technieken en onderwerpen eigen gemaakt.
Vanaf eind jaren 90' doet Monica daarnaast onderzoek naar het mondiale verf- en kleurgebruik in de beeldende kunsten, de basis voor een serie gespecialiseerde publicaties en presentaties.
Schilderkunst
de Spaanse stier, Toros y Tierras, Australian Structures
In aansluiting op het werk, waarmee Monica op de Rijksacademie begonnen is, hebben de schilderijen en tekeningen uit de periode tussen 1976 en 1983 het Nederlandse land, de Hollandse koe en luchten tot onderwerp. Lucht- en landschappen die onder andere door het Ministerie van Buitenlandse zaken voor diverse ambassades en consulaten zijn aangekocht.
Rond 1983 verandert het koele Hollandse palet geleidelijk in een warm, door aardkleuren, roden en gelen gedomineerd gamma, waar uiteindelijk de ‘Toros y Tierras’ mee vormgegeven worden. Het zinderende Andalusische landschap en de krachtige, onberekenbare, Spaanse vechtstier.
Vanaf 2007 wordt Monica's palet verrijkt met een scala van blauwen en groenen door de ontdekking van het Australische licht. Haar jaarlijkse verblijf aan de Zuid-Australische kust vormt de inspiratie voor de nieuwe serie Australian Impressions en Oceans.
Modelleur
beelden in brons en zilver
Synchroon aan het schilderen, ontstond de behoefte aan driedimensionaal vormgeven dat leidde tot een serie bronzen in de traditie van de animaliers.
In maat variërend van een levensgrote Spaanse vechtstier in hoogreliëf tot een serie verfijnde zilveren en bronzen flessenstoppen met dier- en mensfiguren.
Glas
vrij werk en in opdracht
De opleiding monumentaal is de grondslag voor het werken met glas. Op en na de academie voerde Monica een aantal opdrachten in het traditionele glas in lood uit. Daarna volgde de glas-appliqué om in 2006 over te gaan in het fusen van glas. De door Monica ontwikkelde combinatie zandstraal- en fuse-techniek met bulls-eyeglass, is gebruikt voor een aantal ramen in de Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kapel van het OLVG in Amsterdam.
In de zandstraaltechniek vervaardigde ze een serie grote glazen schalen met stier-reliëfs.
Auteur
over verf en kleur, kunst en rund
Monica Rotgans publiceert al geruime tijd in verschillende vakbladen artikelen over kunst en verf, schilderkunst, techniek, rundvee en tauromaquia.
Eind 2005 verscheen van haar hand het standaardwerk 'Verf, 500.000 jaar verf en schilderkunst', een nieuwe kijk op kleur en schilderkunst, vanuit het perspectief van de schilder (uitverkocht).
Fotografie
de intense kijk
De fotografie is een logisch onderdeel van het werk als beeldend kunstenaar, een andere, geïntensiveerde, kijk op de wereld om ons heen. De drie belangrijkste series tot nu toe zijn Andalucìa, Shanghai en recent Australian Structures.
Monica,s werk is aangekocht door vele particulieren, door bedrijven en overheidsinstellingen in binnen- en buitenland. Diverse opdrachten, zowel op het gebied van schilder-, glas- en modelleerkunst, waaronder portretten, wandschilderingen, ramen en sculpturen.
